Woodcock Hike with Professor Laurie Eberhardt

Join us for a nighttime birding hike with Valparaiso University Biology Professor Dr. Laurie Eberhardt, a Behavioral Ecologist who has studied plant-bird interactions.

April is migratory season, so it is a fleeting opportunity to see rare species passing through. We will listen as birds sing their evening songs, tuck in to roost, and finally end with the night birds coming out.

A species of particular interest we may sight or hear is the American woodcock (Scolopax minor), a somewhat uncommon, primarily ground dwelling bird. Many areas of Gabis Arboretum have been restored with the intent of attracting the American woodcock.

Program is limited to 20 participants. Program participation is free but non-members are subject to the $10 carload admission fee.
